This weekend Shane Morand shattered OG records in Guadalajara – we thought you’d like to know more about this incredible city!

id_rather_be_in_guadalajara_coffee_mugsThe stunning city of Guadalajara is a center of learning and culture — as it is home to six prestigious universities, two culinary institutes and a thriving arts scene. It is one of Mexico’s cultural hubs, with cultural tourism providing much income for the bustling metropolis. The city has long been a breeding ground for distinguished poets, writers, painters, actors, film directors and other artists., and visitors are often awestruck by the cuisine and late-night culture, and the strong arts scene.

This thriving culture means there’s another thriving industry in Guadalajara — and that is the cafe and restaurant scene. The cuisine is a mix of pre-Hispanic and Spanish influences, like the rest of Mexico, but dishes here have their own flavors and are made using their own unique techniques. One of the main distinguishing dishes for which Guadalajara is renowned is known as “Birria”. This dish is usually made with goat or lamb meat, which is wrapped in leaves and then cooked in a spicy sauce seasoned with chili peppers, ginger, cumin, black pepper, oregano and cloves. Another dish that is strongly associated with Guadalajara is known as “tortas ahogadas” which translates literally as “drowned tortas” (or sub sandwiches). This sandwich is made using an oblong bun filled with pork and other ingredients, and then covered in a red tomato/chili pepper sauce.

And what would wash down a tasty sandwich like that better than a strong cup of tea or coffee? Tourists may notice the presence of American coffee chains, which are making things like espresso drinks and iced tea more popular than ever. One of the most popular coffee drinks in this region of Mexico is known as “Café de Olla”, a milky coffee drink flavored with cinnamon and sugar.

Why not fix up a batch of something similar using your favorite Organo Gold products? Just add a stick of cinnamon, or ground cinnamon, to your OG Latte or OG Cafe Supreme, and then to finish, add some Piloncillo, a raw Mexican sugar that offers a more “complex” flavor than commercial brown sugar.
